Subject: Ancient Greek Epigraphy and the Internet. Processing of epigraphic texts for the enrichment of the database NAUTILOS

Περίληψη: Στο πλαίσιο του σεμιναρίου οι μεταπτυχιακοί φοιτητές θα ασκηθούν στην επεξεργασία επιγραφών που ρίχνουν φως σε διάφορες πτυχές του δημόσιου και ιδιωτικού βίου της αρχαιότητας (π.χ. ψηφίσματα, συνθήκες, επιστολές, διατάγματα, συμβάσεις, νόμους, καταλόγους κ.ά.). Θα δοθεί ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στις εκδόσεις και τη βιβλιογραφία, στις τεχνικές μεταγραφής, μετάφρασης και στον σχολιασμό. Οι μετέχοντες θα εξοικειωθούν στις μεθόδους και τα εργαλεία με τα οποία καθίσταται εφικτή η διάχυση των επιγραφών σε ευρύτερο κοινό. Τα κείμενα που θα συντάξουν με κατάλληλη επεξεργασία θα εμπλουτίσουν το περιεχόμενο του αναβαθμισμένου ιστότοπου ΝΑΥΤΙΛΟΣ (https://nautilos.arch.uoa.gr/) και θα φέρουν το όνομά του συντάκτη τους.

Summary: During the seminar, postgraduate students will work on inscriptions that shed light on various aspects of the public and private life in antiquity (e.g. decrees, treaties, letters, edicta, contracts, laws, petitions, accounts, lists etc.). Εmphasis will be placed on publications and bibliography, transcription and translation techniques, and commentary. Participants will become familiar with the methods and tools that enable the dissemination of inscriptions to a wider audience. The texts they will write after appropriate editing will enrich the content of the NAUTILOS website (https://nautilos.arch.uoa.gr/) bearing the name of their author.

Θέμα: Πολιτικοί και κοινωνικοί θεσμοί στην Ελληνιστική και Ρωμαϊκή περίοδο

Subject: Political and social institutions in the Hellenistic and Roman periods

Περίληψη: Στο σεμινάριο θα εξεταστούν πολιτικοί και κοινωνικοί θεσμοί που έπαιξαν σημαντικό ρόλο στην οργάνωση των κοινωνιών του ελληνικού χώρου κατά την μετακλασική εποχή (3 αι. π.Χ.-3 αι. μ.Χ.). Θα εξεταστεί κατά πόσο οι εν λόγω θεσμοί αποτελούν επιβιώσεις ή μετεξελίξεις θεσμών παλαιότερων περιόδων· πώς λειτούργησαν εκείνοι οι θεσμοί που επιβίωσαν από παλαιότερες περιόδους στο πλαίσιο των νέων ιστορικών δεδομένων της ελληνιστικής και ρωμαϊκής εποχής· σε ποιες ανάγκες ανταποκρίνονταν και από πού προήλθαν όσοι θεσμοί εμφανίστηκαν κατά την ελληνιστική και ρωμαϊκή περίοδο· ποιες θεμελιώδεις αξίες για την οργάνωση των κοινωνιών εξέφραζαν οι εν λόγω θεσμοί.

Summary: The course will examine political and social institutions that played an important role in the organization of Greek communities of the post-classical era (3^rd c. BCE to 3^rd c. CE). Questions that will be discussed include: to what extent are such institutions continuations or transmutations of earlier ones; how did institutions that survived from earlier periods operate in the changed social and political environment of the post-classical polis; where did institutions that appear for the first time in the Hellenistic and Roman periods emanate from, and what needs did they answer; which fundamental values for the organization of societies did those institutions express.

Subject: War in Greek Antiquity: tactical issues

Περίληψη: Το σεμινάριο επικεντρώνεται σε ζητήματα τακτικής που εφάρμοσαν τα στρατεύματα ἑλληνίδων πόλεων, βασιλέων και ομοσπονδιακών κρατών της Αρχαιότητας από τον ύστερο 6^ο π.Χ. αι. έως την καταστροφή της Κορίνθου. Τα επιμέρους θέματα που θα εξεταστούν είναι η οπλιτική φάλαγγα και η λειτουργία της, το ιππικό, τα ελαφριά σώματα, άλλα βοηθητικά σώματα συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των μισθοφορικών, η στρατιωτική εκπαίδευση και η εξάσκηση στα όπλα, ο ρόλος του γυμνασίου, οι μεγάλες αλλαγές των ελληνιστικών χρόνων, και τα σχετικά εγχειρίδια της Αρχαιότητας.

Summary: The seminar focuses on tactical issues implemented by the armies of Greek city-states, kings, and federal states of Antiquity from the late 6th century BC until the destruction of Corinth. The individual topics that will be examined are the hoplite phalanx and its function, the cavalry, the light corps, other auxiliary corps including mercenaries, military education and weapons training, the role of the gymnasium, the major changes of the Hellenistic period, and the relevant textbooks of Antiquity.
