Θέμα: Δούλοι και δουλεία κατά την ελληνική και ρωμαϊκή αρχαιότητα
Subject: Slaves and slavery in Greek and Roman Antiquity

Περίληψη: Το σεμινάριο εστιάζει στο φαινόμενο της δουλείας στην αρχαία Ελλάδα και τη Ρώμη, αρχής γενομένης από τον Όμηρο. Εξετάζει τους τρόπους υποδούλωσης και κτήσης, το θέμα των εξαρτημένων πληθυσμών, τη ‘νομική’ υπόσταση των δούλων, τις συνθήκες διαβίωσης τους, τις διαφορετικές κατηγορίες τους, τη σύναψη σχέσεων με ελεύθερους – πολίτες και μη, τις όποιες δεσμεύσεις των κυρίων τους και των πόλεων, την απασχόλησή τους στο στρατό, τη συμβολή τους στην οικονομία, τις επαναστάσεις τους, τους τρόπους και λόγους απελευθέρωσης, το πως που εμφανίζονται στην κωμωδία. Τέλος, συνεξετάζει τα δουλικά συστήματα στην Ανατολή (Ασσυριακό βασίλειο, Περσική αυτοκρατορία κλπ., Παλαιά Διαθήκη, Αίγυπτος).
Summary: The seminar focuses on the phenomenon of slavery in ancient Greece and Rome, starting with Homer. It examines the methods of enslavement and acquisition, the issue of dependent populations, the ‘legal’ status of slaves, their living conditions, their different categories, the establishment of relations with free people – citizens and non-citizens, any commitments of their masters and cities, their employment in the army, their role in economic growth, their revolutions, the ways and reasons for liberation, the way they appear in comedy. Finally, it examines the slave systems in the East (Assyrian kingdom, Persian empire, etc., Old Testament, Egypt).

Subject: Local communities in the Greek-speaking East during the Roman period

Περίληψη: Το σεμινάριο εξετάζει πολύπλευρα ζητήματα των τοπικών κοινωνιών στην ελληνορωμαϊκή Ανατολή (κυρίως Μακεδονία, Θράκη, Μικρά Ασία). Τα θέματα που θα μελετηθούν, αφορούν την ίδρυση και οργάνωση των ρωμαϊκών επαρχιών, τη διάδοση των ρωμαϊκών πολιτικών δικαιωμάτων, την αυτοκρατορική λατρεία, τις σχέσεις των τοπικών ελίτ με τη ρωμαϊκή διοίκηση, την αστικοποίηση, τα κληροδοτήματα ως μέσο κοινωνικής πολιτικής, τη διαμόρφωση συλλογικών ταυτοτήτων, την ανάπτυξη του χριστιανισμού. Συνολικά, το σεμινάριο φωτίζει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι τοπικές κοινωνίες διαπραγματεύτηκαν με τη ρωμαϊκή εξουσία και δέχτηκαν τη ρωμαϊκή επίδραση, διατηρώντας παράλληλα στοιχεία της ιδιαίτερης πολιτισμικής και θεσμικής τους ταυτότητας.
Summary: The seminar explores multiple dimensions of local community life in the Greco-Roman East (with particular focus on Macedonia, Thrace, and Asia Minor). Among the themes addressed are the establishment and organization of Roman provinces, the extension of Roman citizenship, the imperial cult, the relationship between local elites and Roman administrative structures, processes of urbanization, euergetism as a vehicle of social policy, the construction of collective identities, and the spread of Christianity. Taken together, these topics illuminate how local communities navigated their relationship with Roman authority – assimilating Roman influence while simultaneously maintaining the contours of their own cultural and institutional distinctiveness.

Subject: Institutions, Politics and Society in the Greek cities under Roman Rule

Περίληψη: Το σεμινάριο εξετάζει διάφορες όψεις του δημόσιου βίου των ελληνικών πόλεων υπό ρωμαϊκή κυριαρχία. Με βάση τη μελέτη πρωτογενών ιστορικών πηγών (κυρίως επιγραφικών αλλά και γραμματειακών και νομικών), οι φοιτητές θα κληθούν να εξετάσουν μια ποικιλία ζητημάτων, όπως το φαινόμενο του ευεργετισμού και των αποδόσεων τιμών, ο ρόλος των τοπικών θεσμών των πόλεων και η αλληλεπίδρασή τους με την επαρχιακή διοίκηση και τον Ρωμαίο αυτοκράτορα, η απόδοση ρωμαϊκών πολιτικών δικαιωμάτων και άλλα. Τα ακριβή θέματα θα καθορισθούν με βάση τα ενδιαφέροντα των συμμετεχόντων.

Summary: The seminar focuses on various aspects of the civic life in the Greek cities under Roman rule. Based on the study of primary historical sources (mainly epigraphic, but literary and legal as well), students will be called to examine a variety of issues, such as the phenomenon of euergetism and the award of honours, the role of civic institutions, the latter’s interaction with the provincial administration and the Roman emperor, the award of Roman citizenship etc. The precise themes of each session will be co-defined by the participant’s interests.
