STYLIANOS ΚΑΤΑΚIS

Stylianos Katakis holds a first degree in archaeology (1985, Athens) and, after doctoral research in Bonn, Germany (1987/88), a PhD in Classical Archaeology (Athens, 1992). Between 1994-2009, after having succeeded in a specially written competition, he worked as a curator of Antiquities in the Archaeological Service of the Greek Ministry of Culture, initially in the Ephorate of Antiquities of Euboia (1994-2001) and then in the Special Service for the management of the Operational Program “Culture” (3rd European Community Framework Support). Since 2010, he has been teaching at the Department of History and Archaeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Classical archaeology and especially sculpture and the Archaeology of the Roman period, in under- and postgraduate level.

He directs, also, the university excavations in the city and the Asklepios Sanctuary at Epidauros (with prof. em. V. Lambrinoudakis) and in the archaeological site of the “Roman Balneum” at Rafina, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of East Attica. His current research and study engagements include the completion of the 2nd volume of the publication of the Roman sarcophagi in the National Archaeological Museum, as well as the publication of the sculptures from Epidauros (with two postdoctoral researchers) and from Aptera on Crete.

Since 2019, he is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
